In the Goblet of Fire book, Hermoine forms the organization: Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare (S.P.E.W.) after witnessing the mistreatment of Winky. From her muggle point of view, it was clearly oppression and enslavement of an entire race of beings.
Although Hermoine had the elves best interest at heart, her assumptions of what’s best for them without thought to the immediate culture shock consequences led to poor execution of her agenda. She began to leave pieces of clothing in the Griffindor common room in the hopes that some house elves would pick them up and free themselves.
Obviously her plan back fired as the elves took offense to her actions and further distanced themselves from Hermoine.
Despite the mistakes she made, Hermoine did something that most of us don’t have the guts to do: Take action towards change. It doesn’t matter that Hermoine’s initiative didn’t pan out the way she planned.
So the next time we see something that can be better, should be better, needs to be better, ask ourselves: what would Hermoine do?
