90 Day Fiancé – double standards

Yes, one of out guilt pleasures is watching the show 90 day fiancé. The drama and the people on the show are oftentimes just unbelievable.

One recurring theme is double standards. In season 4, we meet Ed aka (no neck Ed) and his beau Rose from the Philippines. Shortly after Ed arrives in person, he asks Rose to take an std test under the excuse that it is because she refuses to talk about her past relationships.

When Rose asks him back if he is going to take an std test as well, Ed comes up with a plethora of excuses why he doesn’t need to/won’t. He’s talked about his past relationships. He’ll only do one in the US.

Obviously, everyone that makes it onto the show have something bizarre or wrong with them. That’s why makes interesting tv. But it makes me sad too. They act the way all crazy because they’ve been hurt in the past. And they put up passive aggressive, or sometimes straight up aggressive, walls as a defense mechanism.

Most of the times, these measures are actually what derails their progress toward their relationships. The double standard is a clear reflection of this defense mechanism at work.

Oh yea, obviously, Rose losses it and can’t believe what a giant douche Ed was asking for an std test and leaves for the night. Alas they do make up… but there’s still more to the season I haven’t watched yet.
