Make Your Own Good Luck

Today a coworker told me “good luck – no, you don’t need luck, you will do well”. Of course I said “thank you”, and then added, “but, I won’t say no to good luck!”

Although I appreciated the complete vote of confidence, I do think that good luck has it’s place. But it’s more nuanced than that. While some people may experience extremely good luck without doing anything, the majority of perceived “luck” is a combination of preparation, mindset, and opportunity.

Being prepared means that you’ve done the necessary work and positioned yourself to be ready for opportunity.

Having the right mindset is needed because your mind will find ways to make your thoughts real.

Only then, when you’re ready, will opportunity appear and make it look like you’ve got good luck.

In a way, Billy Zane in Titanic got it right: “a real man makes his own luck”.
