It’s 1993. Man has brought dinosaurs back from extinction. But acknowledging the dangers of introducing catastrophic disruptions to the order of nature if these creatures are to get into the wild, the scientists have genetically engineered only female dinosaurs to prevent procreation.
However, the ever charming and eccentric chaos mathematician Dr. Ian Malcolm warns the scientists that, “life, uh, finds a way”. Sure enough, paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant finds hatched eggshells in the park. Grant deduces that the frog DNA used to fill in missing genome sequences enabled the dinosaurs to change their sex in a single-sex environment.
Back in the real world of 2020 (which incidentally is no less frightening than Jurassic Park), this past week’s hurricane Isaias ripped across the East Coast. There was a tremendous amount of damage in a very short period of time. My friends and family suffered extended power outages. At the shore, I saw that an uprooted tree had picked up a parked SUV two feet up off the pavement.
But electricity was eventually restored. The roads were cleared of debris and reopened. The SUV – well, it was gone the next day – hopefully only sustained minimal damage. The point is that despite the destructive awesomeness of a hurricane, we weathered the storm (pun intended) and recovered.
Oftentimes, we feel powerless when confronted with difficulties. We face challenges of all sizes everyday in our life. It’s important to remember that we are resilient and resourceful. There’s a solution to every problem.
Even when everything seems impossible, remember that we, uh, always find a way.
